New Year...New Job...Different Goals

It's another year, and while I could say that one resolution is to blog more often, it's not. Since writing has never been an aspiration but rather an outlet for frustration, I've never been one to write when things are going well. It seems too much like bragging. However, since it is a new year, and it has started out with some big changes, I figured it was worth an entry.

At the end of December, I left my first post-doc; at the beginning of January, I started a new post-doc. So far, three days in, I'm enjoying the new job fairly well. While the camaraderie isn't really there yet, I've met a lot of nice people so far all more than willing to help. The project is interesting, and I definitely have a bunch to learn. I'm currently working on reading a bunch of papers to get up to speed in the field. I'm hoping to learn a lot from this experience and I'm very optimistic about this job.

First Day

Jeremy's first day of work is today, and I think I might be more nervous than he was. I'm not nervous about the job or his ability to perform whatever it is that he needs to do, but I am nervous about how he's liking it. I really hope this is something he'll enjoy.

Decisions

Jeremy still hasn't found a job he wants yet. He's turned down one offer, and he's been turned down by another, and while he's got several other possibilities and interviews, it's becoming unlikely that he'll be employed before the end of the year. This puts us at a crossroads for Christmas. We stayed here for Thanksgiving because frankly, 4 days in Dallas couldn't justify the $800 a ticket price tag. Christmas would be different though because I'd try to get the time between Christmas and New Years off as well. Without a job, he wouldn't have to worry about time off. It makes it harder to justify the cost of traveling though with only one income. We have a bunch of money saved up just for this occasion, but I wonder if it's more prudent to be frugal now in case he doesn't find a job for an extended period of time.
